Local Artistes Singapore
Who said Singapore doesn’t have talent? Over the years, many of our local artistes have made a name for themselves and even expanded overseas! Here’s a list of Local Singaporean artistes who have made it big!
1. JJ Lin
JJ Lin is a name familiar to many Singaporeans. Even though he is now based in Taiwan, JJ Lin kickstarted his music career in Singapore in 2003. He is acknowledged for his songwriting skills, in which notable compositions include A-Mei’s “Remember”. The famous singer was even a judge on popular Chinese singing competition Sound of My Dream!
2. Nathan Hartono
Nathan Hartono brought glory to Singapore when he emerged as rst runner-up in internationally-known Chinese singing competition Sing! China last year. Despite only rising to fame recently, the singer has an impressive music background. He even graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music majoring in Music Production & Engineering in Boston!
3. Stephanie Sun
Stephanie Sun is no stranger to the Singapore music scene and she needs no introduction. The Singaporean songstress has sold over 30 million records and is wildly popular not only locally, but also in countries such as mainland China and Hong Kong!
4. Gentle Bones
Joel Tan, better known by his stage name Gentle Bones, is a young musician that is well-known amongst the younger crowd. His career kickstarted unconventionally on YouTube, and his self-titled debut EP charted at #1 on the iTunes chart with his debut single “Until We Die”. “Geniuses & Thieves”, his second EP, was released on 3 June 2016 and also charted at #1 on the iTunes chart on the same day it was released. To add on to his outstanding achievements, Gentle Bones’ two-night concert on the 10th and 11th of June 2016 was also sold out!
5. The Sam Willows
A Singaporean pop band formed in 2012, The Sam Willows is arguably the most popular band in Singapore now. The band consists of siblings Narelle and Benjamin Kheng, as well as Sandra Riley Tang and Jonathan Chua. The Sam Willows is relatively active in the music scene, releasing 5 singles since 2015, with hits including Glasshouse, For Love and Take Heart. Fun fact: They are the rst Asian band to be featured on Spotify’s Spotlight initiative!
6. Charlie Lim
Although he is known as a Singapore-based singer-songwriter, Charlie Lim had moved to Melbourne, Australia when he was only 14. Therefore, many of his achievements are Australia-based! These include topping the state of Victoria for music performance and being selected by VCE’s Season of Excellence to perform at Hamer Hall. A few years upon graduation, Charlie Lim dived into the Southeast Asia market in 2011 with his self-titled EP and has since achieved remarkable results. He is also the rst Singaporean artist to sell out two shows at the 10th edition of the Mosaic Music Festival!
8. Anthony Chen
If you haven’t heard of Anthony Chen, you must have heard of Ilo Ilo. Bagging Singapore’s rst Best Feature Film and Best New Director in the 50th Golden Horse Award, Anthony Chen has certainly set a record for our country! Furthermore, Anthony Chen’s lm had even beaten some of the most established names in the industry, including Wong Kar Wai’s Grandmaster.
9. Wiltay
The homegrown talent was rejected by Chinese and Taiwan record labels because of his 1.7m height. However, this obviously did not stop him as he went on to bag the Best Pop Album Of The Year at the Hollywood F.A.M.E Awards with his debut album WTF!
10. Oon Shu An
Many of us know Shu An as the Clicknetwork host for Tried and Tested. Little do you know that the stage and television actress had landed a role in Netix television series Marco Polo! Shu An played the role of Jing Fei, the favourite concubine of China’s Chancellor in the show.
